Musing on muses

In the life of every artist – great, aspiring, and everything in between – there is someone with a knack for motivating and inspiring creativity at even the lowest point of his or her art. There are long, boring stories about the history or mythology of these creative muses, and none are worth sharing for the purpose of this brief post. Rather, let it suffice to say that after years of creative drought, I’m feeling a pulse return to me, and I owe it, in part, to the possibility of bringing a new muse into my life and work. Perhaps I’m getting a little ahead of myself in saying so; even so, I’m excited at the prospect and look forward to what can come from the conversations I’ve been having over the last few weeks with creative young people entering my sphere.

For what it’s worth, I haven’t forgotten the talented young individuals who have served as my muses and protégées in the past. Not at all. Instead, it is because of their impact on my development as an artist that I’ve experienced such a drought in recent years; no one could hold a candle to them. Part of my growth is to mature beyond the past, to seek greater inspiration from new faces. And that’s what’s got me so hype now. I think it’s happening. Only time will tell. In the meantime, I’ve got enough spark in me to keep me alive until something happens. Or doesn’t.
